We know that every thing has its high and low, similar is the story with Toyota's Sequoias. In 2002, Toyota was selling over 70,000 Sequoias. Last year, that number dropped to below 20,000 units.
A source speaking with PickupTrucks.com confirmed that the Sequoia won't live on, partially due to slow sales, but surely in part to get Toyota's CAFE ratings in check before the new rules hit in 2015. But all's not lost for the automaker's body-on-frame offerings.
A new refreshed design of Tundra is set to arrive in 2014. Although sales of the Tundra haven't lived up to Toyota's expectations, so it will be trying its luck by redesign and some refreshment.
Reuters says Toyota Motor Corp will likely be able to build the popular Prius hybrid car in the United States when it is remodelled next, a top executive said on Tuesday.
Toyota had been planning to produce the world's best-selling gasoline-electric car at its new Mississippi plant, but instead decided to build the Corolla sedan after local production of that model ended with the closure of a California factory formerly co-owned with General Motors Co .
"The main components for the Prius -- such as the motor and battery -- are not mature enough for local production," Executive Vice President Atsushi Niimi said. "We expect that they'll be ready with the next remodelling."
Niimi, who oversees production as well as regional operations in North America and China for Toyota, said the company would decide in due course where in the United States it would make the fourth-generation Prius, expected around 2016.
Toyota, the world's largest seller of hybrid autos, in May said it would invest $50 million in Tesla and jointly develop electric models with the U.S. startup. Both prototypes are modified Toyota vehicles, said JB Straubel, Tesla's chief technology officer.
Tesla Motors Inc. said it will deliver two rechargeable prototype electric cars to Toyota Motor Corp. this month as a first step in their alliance.
“Since our announcement in May, Toyota and Tesla engineering teams have made a lot of progress in a short amount of time, and it is exciting to start seeing some initial results,” Straubel said in an e-mail message. Tesla has signed an agreement to deliver two prototypes to Toyota by the end of July, he said.
Going green seems the way the Japanese Automaker wants to go. Toyota plans to introduce three new-to-market green vehicles in 2012, a company source said.
A battery electric vehicle, a plug-in version of the Prius and an as-yet-unveiled variant of the Prius will arrive in U.S. dealerships in the first half of 2012, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the plans.
The second Prius vehicle will begin the creation of an ongoing family of vehicles that will carry Prius badging but will not be a separate brand. The battery electric vehicle probably will be similar to the electric version of the iQ, which Toyota unveiled at the 2009 Detroit auto show.
Toyota Motor Corp. will give its product development engineers an additional month to complete vehicles to address potential quality problems in an effort to prevent more image-damaging recalls.
"The fast growth of the past decade has been too much in some areas for the company to keep up with," Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada told reporters at Toyota headquarters today.
He added that Toyota's future growth will be determined by its engineering capacity.
Uchiyamada, who is in charge of research and development, said Toyota has allocated 1,000 engineers to deal with quality issues, up 50 percent.
Toyota Motor Corp. received complaints three years ago about engine problems that sparked recalls this week of more than 270,000 Lexus and Toyota vehicles in Asia and North America.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today released Toyota's "Defect Information Report" on the vehicles affected by the recall.
In the report, Toyota said it monitored U.S. field technical reports from March 2007 to August 2008.
"The number of reports of broken valve springs was relatively small, and the vast majority reported abnormal engine noise, rough engine performance, and no start conditions readily noticeable to vehicle operators," Toyota said in the four-page report.
Toyota dropped to 21st this year (out of 33 brands) from sixth in 2009 in the J.D. Power & Associates Initial Quality Study. The automaker also fell below the industry average for the first time in the 24-year history of the survey, a decline attributed to Toyota’s massive recalls over accelerator-pedal problems.
Domestic automakers, also for the first time in the study’s history, have caught up with European and Asian brands.
The study looks at 2010 vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Consumers were asked whether they had any of 228 possible problems, which include malfunctions and design issues like the ease-of-use of controls and brakes generating too much dust resulting in dirty wheels.
